Data residency in Germany - the Atlassian cloud moves

Written by Nicolas Brunson | Feb 6, 2025 4:51:52 PM

Data residency, i.e. the location of the servers, is a key issue for cloud services - not just in Germany, but throughout the European Union thanks to the GDPR. From a German perspective, Atlassian still had a small supply gap here. Although the Australian software giant offered European server locations, it was not clear where exactly the server would be located.

Atlassian has now changed this: From November 7, it will be possible to securely base all new and existing cloud instances in Germany. If your instance is still located in the EU, you can now move it. The move will take place in waves over several weeks. Therefore, individual customers may not be able to select this new storage location immediately. Simply check back the following week and there is a good chance that the new option will be available to you. According to Atlassian, the migration phase should be completed by December 5.

This means that there are already four storage regions to choose from: the USA, Australia, the European Union and now Germany. The UK, Japan and Canada are to follow at the end of 2023. Atlassian is thus taking into account the regional and national data protection guidelines that exist in the various countries.

You can find out more about data residency in Germany on the official Atlassian website.
